Car Audio: The Best of the Best...
It's a question many of us think about- we might dream about it- and we always try to get as close to it as our abilities (and budget) will allow.
What's the best I can get?
Well, it's time we spent a few paragraphs going over what some of the industry standards are and what we can offer at Ask The Advisors and Serious Autosport when it comes to car audio. To begin, let’s define what “the best” actually is…
Superlative of good.
- Surpassing all others in excellence, achievement, or quality; most excellent: the best performer; the best grade of ore.
- Most satisfactory, suitable, or useful; most desirable:the best solution...
- One that surpasses all others.
- The best part, moment, or value: The best available.
- The optimum condition or quality.
- The supreme effort one can make: doing our best.

Having the best means knowing that you’ve got performance that exceeds your expectations as well as those from others, and when it comes to car audio, the same holds true.
Amongst the mass of options available to you as a consumer, being able to select the best means separating the great from the average. In car audio technology, there are manufacturers that focus on providing simply the best gear out there, rather than churning out the same level of good to mediocre products.
So what makes one manufacturer’s product superior to that of another?
Manufacturers known for consistently providing the best grade of products are few and far between- having established themselves over time thanks to a code of quality set by their founders- the guys who put their passion and dedication into developing the products. These companies; with names such as Brax, Morel and JL Audio; pride themselves on bringing products to market that exceed industry standards in design, construction and performance. You can see this level of quality in other areas with names including McIntosh, BMW, Rolex and many others.
When designing and constructing a product, you can take the shortcut or the longer route. The shortcut involves average to little product design, utilizing existing components (usually from cheaper overseas sources) and rushing the product to market in the hopes that “over-marketing” it will result in higher sales, usually through those “big box” retailers, lower-end small shops or even the occasional flea market/ fairground vendors. (I like to call this stuff “Coors Light” car audio.) Taking the longer route means putting more effort into the actual product design, higher emphasis on selecting the materials/ components that will be used to construct the product and utilizing years of expert craftsmanship to achieve the best results.

In car speaker design- the same as in amplifier and head unit design- you find the same results. Better components almost always mean better performance. Hand-selected parts, higher spec tolerances, higher grade speaker materials for woofers and tweeters all mean better sound quality as well as longevity. Of course, you will pay for this level of quality!
If you’re in the market for the best level of car audio speakers, plan on spending $1,600 and up for a set. You will find some excellent choices from Morel including the Elate 62W and 63W ($1,399.00-$1,599.00) component systems. Morel is a high end speaker manufacturer I’ve talked about in previous blogs that spares nothing when it comes to quality. They remain involved throughout the entire process from design to manufacture- giving their product lineup superior quality and performance.

Beyond Morel you will find component speakers from Brax, a German manufacturer that puts out top-notch speakers and amplifiers- and has a solid lineage to back it up. Plan on shelling out a hefty $3,300 for the 3-Way components, but you won’t be disappointed! These are some really well designed speakers, with no expense spared when it came to design.
